Festival of Liberties, Brussels (Belgium)

"Every Step You Take" is about to have its Belgian premiere at the "Festival of Liberties 08" ("Festival des Libertes 08"), which takes place in Brussels (Belgium) 16th - 26th October 2008.

The documentary takes part in the International Competition section of the festival.

The official festival description reads as follows:
"38 unedited films brought together in one international competition. Bolstered by the success of the first edition, the Festival des Libertés intends to celebrate cinematographic creation each year as a vector of resistance and cultural unity through a program of unedited, international films embellished with meetings with the creators. A jury comprised of personalities from diverse backgrounds will choose the film that, by its content, its engagement and its power of renunciation, reflects the questions brought to the festival regarding the defense of rights and liberties."

The film will screen on Tuesday 21 October at 7:30 pm in Flagey, Studio 1 - Place Sainte Croix - 1050 Brussels. The entry fee is € 5,-. For reservation details, please go here.

May and June 2008 were packed with additional screenings of EVERY STEP YOU TAKE, especially in Germany and Austria.

The peak of this screening tour were two additional festival screenings in the UK and Austria, and at both festivals the film was nominated for an award.

First is the "Festival of Nations" ("Festival der Nationen") in Austria, where EVERY STEP YOU TAKE won the "Ebenseer Bear"!

Only one day later, on 22 June 2008, EVERY STEP YOU TAKE screened at the prestigious International Filmmaker Festival in Kent, UK. There, the film was nominated for "Best Documentary", among only three other films. Click here for the full list of nominations [PDF Link].

EVERY STEP YOU TAKE was selected by Tiburon International Film Festival (in California, very close to San Francisco), where it had its long-overdue U.S. premiere! The screening was very well attended.

The festival took place from March 13 - 21, 2008.

Recent international festival dates

NORWAY

In November 2007, EVERY STEP YOU TAKE was screened in competition at WT Os International Film Festival in the town of Os in Norway. It was one among only four documentaries nominated for the Best Documentary award!

Though the Best Documentary award was won by the US documentary "Strictly Background", the nomination was a great honour and festival organizers told us attendance and reception of EVERY STEP YOU TAKE at the festival was very good. Thank you!

EVERY STEP YOU TAKE screened at WT Os International Film Festival in Norway on November 9, 2007 at 7:30 pm.

AUSTRIA

The second festival screening of EVERY STEP YOU TAKE in Austria after its world premiere in March 2007 at the Diagonale took place in November 2007 at the Austrian student film festival film:riss 07 in the beautiful town of Salzburg, where director Nino Leitner studied and finished the documentary as his diploma film.

The crew was happy for the festival to screen the film in the town where a lot of the editing and post-production work for the film was done.

BRAZIL

EVERY STEP YOU TAKE had its great South American premiere in Brazil at the 31st Mostra - São Paulo International Film Festival back in October 2007!

The festival took place from October 19 - November 1 in the giant metropolis of São Paulo (Brazil). Director Nino Leitner flew all the way around the globe to attend the premiere in Brazil!

According to the official catalogue, Nino Leitner was the youngest filmmaker among all directors having a feature-length film screened at the festival! Over 470 films were screened at the festival.

There were two screening dates for EVERY STEP YOU TAKE (CADA PASSO QUE VOCÊ DÁ):

The film was screened with another film in the PROGRAMA DUPLO 3, as part of the INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE section of the festival. A version with electronic Portuguese subtitles was shown to the audiences.

GERMANY

In October 2007, there was also the Germany premiere of EVERY STEP YOU TAKE in the city of Osnabrück at the 22nd Independent FilmFest Osnabrueck ("22. Unabhängiges FilmFest Osnabrück").

There, the film was screened with German subtitles for the first time. Optional German subtitles are available on the DVD version of the film, which can be ordered now.

EVERY STEP YOU TAKE was one of only a handful of films nominated for the "Friedensfilmpreis" (Peace Film Prize) of the city of Osnabrueck.

The documentary was screened on October 18 at 5:30 pm at the "Kino in der Lagerhalle". Download the full programme right here.

Director Nino Leitner flew in and attended the screening for a Q&A session after the screening. The German audience was very enthusiastic about the film and the Q&A session turned into a vivid discussion about various aspects the film brought up - also because of the fact that Osnabrueck's citizens themselves were facing their own recent installation of the first public video surveillance in the whole town - which of course stirred mixed opinions.

In all, it was a fantastic festival in a perfectly intimate screening environment, with lots of other international screen gems to both please the audience's eyes and fire up interesting discussions among people from everywhere. So don't miss the Osnabrueck Independent FilmFest! It's a perfect insiders' tip.

London Premiere @ Portobello Film Festival - FREE ADMISSION!

Less than a month after the UK premiere of EVERY STEP YOU TAKE at Cambridge Film Festival 2007, the huge Portobello Film Festival 2007 will host the London premiere of the documentary.

And the best: Admission to all events at Portobello Film Festival is free for all!

Portobello Film Festival 2007 takes place from 1 - 21 August 2007 in London at various venues. EVERY STEP YOU TAKE will be screened as part of the 'Documentary Day' on 5 August from 12 noon - 11 pm. According to the official programme of this day, EVERY STEP will be one of the last films, which means an evening premiere at approx. 8 pm. However, please be there earlier as the programmers might decide to screen the film earlier, and there will also be limited seating.

EVERY STEP YOU TAKE had its UK premiere at the 27th Cambridge Film Festival, and it was a great success. The documentary became a runner-up for the audience award, it is in the top ten list of this year's Cambridge Film Festival's most popular films.

Director Nino Leitner was available for a Q&A session right after the screening on July 12. He was confronted with a very interested, yet concerned audience that involved him in an interesting discussion about various aspects on the film.

The Q&A session was recorded in its entirety, you can watch it right here:

"I was very happy to be invited to this prestigious event, which is one of the UK's largest film festivals. The documentary finally reach its intended audience, the British people. The audience's reactions were very positive," states director Nino Leitner, "it really seems like the topic was being seen as underrepresented in British media not just by me".

"I've never before been to a festival that was as filmmaker-friendly as Cambridge Film Festival, the organizers were amazing. I hope to be invited again to Cambridge in the future, it was great fun!"

Croatian Premiere @ Libertas Film Festival 2007

Regular screenings in Austria - EXTENDED!

We are glad to announce the first regular public screenings of "Every Step You Take" in Austrian cinemas!
(Click on the photos to get a larger view of the flyer that is on Vienna's streets, café's and clubs now!)

After its successful world premiere at Diagonale 07 film festival in March, "Every Step You Take" will be screened at select Austrian cinemas and locations starting in June.

The first cinema to screen the documentary is the "Schikaneder" cinema in Vienna. (Screenings at the "Leokino" cinema in Innsbruck have been delayed until fall this year.)

EXTENSION! Due to the success, three more screenings at the Schikaneder have been scheduled for the summer months. This time, they're gonna be "late night specials" at 11.00 pm.

42 films were in this competition, and "Every Step You Take" is the only finalist which had absolutely no funding or production company!

The Audience Award has finally been won by "Vienna's Lost Daughters" by Mirjam Unger, an amazing documentary about eight strong women who have fled the Nazis as little girls from Vienna and live in New York now.

With an estimated four million surveillance cameras, Britain is by far the most-watched nation on earth. Every Londoner is on camera about 300 times a day. How could this come about in George Orwell’s mother country? What were the ignition sparks for this development? Why haven’t other nations copied the schemes if they really are as successful as the Home Office and the police are saying? Is there a real effect in crime reduction or has CCTV only been introduced for the people’s ‘peace of mind’? Are there any vested interests in the proliferation of CCTV?

Trying to answer questions like these, Nino Leitner’s one-hour documentary “EVERY STEP YOU TAKE” digs deep into an entirely British phenomenon: nation-wide video surveillance. It features formal interviews with the surveillance researcher Professor Clive Norris, Deputy Chief Constable Andy Trotter from the British Transport Police, a representative of Britain’s largest civil rights group Liberty, a CCTV manager from a public local CCTV scheme, experts in the field of transport policing and many more. The surveillance reality in Britain is compared with another member of the E.U., Austria. Compared to the UK, it can be seen as a developing country in terms of CCTV, but just as elsewhere all over the world, politicians are eager to extend the surveillance gaze.

Biography

Nino Leitner is a director and artist born in Innsbruck/Austria. He finished his master studies in MultiMediaArt at the University of Applied Sciences and Technologies in Salzburg (= “Fachhochschule Salzburg“) in December 2006 with merit. He spent his winter study period of 2004/2005 as an exchange student at the film studies faculty of Solent University in Southampton, England.

There, he directed a short documentary, which deals with the omnipresent video surveillance in Great Britain in a critical, yet objective way. Two Spanish students, Naiara Martinez de Marigorta and Javier García Garaizar were the producers of the film, while a fellow student of Nino from Austria, Gregor Grkinic and a regular student in Southampton were also part of the team.
Nino felt that the topic wasn’t given enough room in the short 15-minute-film, and so he decided to re-activate the project in 2006 and made it his diploma film. After months of research, he went back to Britain with a new team, and shot a range of new interviews and lots of new background material. The final result is a one-hour documentary that deals with the topic video surveillance in-depth.

His other works include video and film and photography. Short films like ”Merry Christmas?“, “Panta”, ”Mind the Bag” or “Künstler-Lektion” (“Artist Lesson”) earned some recognition at small film festivals. He also did the music video ”Mrs. Brainshaker” (with Alex Schönauer and Ivica Putnik) for the Austrian pop band ”Urban Ego“, or “Kualala Lumpur” (with Ivica Putnik) for the band “Hotchpotch”, aired on the Austrian music video channel Go-TV. Other video works of Nino are several TV commercials, for instance.

In the summer of 2004, Nino made an internship at the DVD-post-production house and sound studio ”Solid Sound“ in Hall/Tirol, where he contributed his skills in order to create intro animation and menu designs for the new DVD release of BMG Bertelsmann’s and Anke Engelke’s sitcom ”Anke – Die Comedyserie“ for the German TV channel “Sat 1”, among other things.
In 2005, he was an intern at “Novotny & Novotny Film Production” in Vienna for several months, mainly working in the field of commercials as production assistant with a great range of creative and technical responsibilities before and during the shootings.
Nino has also been working in photography as a digital artist for many years already, assisting the photographer Gerda Eichholzer, who is based in Munich and Innsbruck.

Nino Leitner also does a lot of commercial video and film work and enjoys to realise his own original ideas in all of his films. His next aim is to work professionally on documentaries in Britain, where the standard for factual film is probably the highest in the world. Currently, Nino lives and works in Vienna.

When I first set foot on the British islands for my student exchange semester in 2004, I immediately sensed that there was something strange going on. As they say, from a stranger’s perspective, one sees a country with very different eyes than its inhabitants do. People who live at a certain place or country for a long enough time tend to become blinded for many things due to the routine they develop – everything becomes usual to them. That was obviously the case with the massive amount of video surveillance cameras that are all over Britain. The British don’t seem to care, they don’t even seem to see them at all. However, we – a team of film students from Austria and Spain – immediately noticed the strange fact, and we asked ourselves: Why so many? They must be incredibly effective in whatever they are doing, since there are so many of them around. Or are there other reasons for their massive proliferation? Why doesn’t every country use them in case they are as effective in fighting crime as their omnipresence suggests?

As a consequence and in order to satisfy our interests, we decided to produce a documentary on the subject. In the course of the production we encountered that there was so much more to the topic that we were able to cover in the short amount of time that we had available. Nevertheless, we did manage to do a series of very interesting interviews with people that were the top experts in their fields – for instance, the surveillance researcher Clive Norris or the manager of a public British CCTV scheme. Consequently, we managed to make a decent documentary short, but I always felt it just wasn’t enough. There was just so much more to the topic that I deemed worth covering in the film.

During the following year, there were several incidents which reminded me of the importance of this documentary project: In early 2005, the Austrian government started installing public video surveillance cameras at particular “potential high-crime areas” all over the country for the first time. Several months later, the bomb terror attacks on the London Transport System occurred. Despite the fact that the fatal attacks on the fully video-surveillance-covered London Underground weren’t prevented with the help of CCTV monitors that are monitored around the clock, a further massive expansion of their video surveillance schemes was initialised.

It was this moment when I decided to definitely take on the project again as soon as possible. That moment had come when I had to decide on what to produce for my master graduation project. After months of research, I went back to Britain with a new team. We did a range of new interviews and shot lots of new background material on the topic.

This project would not have been possible with the support and professionalism of many people, all of which are included at the end of the credits roll. However, I have to thank my camerawoman Sigrid Nagele in particular, because she was there to support me when nobody else seemed to have the time. Furthermore, our tutor in Britain, Jenny Morgan, did far more than was expected of her, and her initiative was the final ignition spark that made me finish the project. Thank you all!
